Choose the population before comparing a total

Taiwan MOE publishes both a department overview and a detailed student census. They serve different research questions. The department overview provides its own department observations. The student census retains named department and class populations with qualification, day, county and system labels.

Start with the census to inspect a specific named class or year-level population. Start with the overview to browse the department records represented in that file. Keep the two sources separate until an official correspondence establishes how their populations connect.

Why one department code can appear more than once

Different named classes can share a department code. A code alone does not tell you that their student counts should be combined. In CollegeVerse, a census history requires the school name, department name, source codes, qualification, day label, county and system labels to match.

If any identity label changes, a separate retained series begins. That is an evidence boundary, not a claim that the organization closed or was replaced. Open both records and inspect the original labels before drawing a continuity conclusion.

How to read the academic year

The source academic year remains visible as printed. The directory supplies a calendar label to help navigation. Neither the latest download date nor the page's update time changes the observation year.

The official census catalogue identifies October 15 as its annual reference date and describes coverage of students with formal enrollment status. A student total is a historical census observation. It is not the number of applicants, available places or students who will enter in the next intake.

Check these details before comparing schools

  1. Use the same source and academic year.
  2. Compare the same qualification and day labels.
  3. Check whether the record describes a named class or a broader department observation.
  4. Read the inclusion changes and missing-value notes.
  5. Confirm the original population labels on each detail page.

The catalogue states that the degree-preparatory population of international specialized programs was excluded through source year 112 and included from 113. A change across that boundary can reflect coverage as well as enrollment. Do not label the full difference as growth in an unchanged population.

Why codes are not automatically padded and joined

Recent census files can print school code 1 while another source prints 0001. CollegeVerse preserves those strings and does not assume that adding zeros proves a cross-file identity. Department code widths also vary across historical files. A convenient-looking match can conceal different populations or labels.

Use the student census directory to inspect named populations, the department directory for its separate overview, and the Taiwan subject discovery pages for broader browsing. Verify current courses and admission eligibility with the institution.
