An SAT percentile range and an admissions requirement answer different questions. A range describes scores within a reported student group. A requirement tells an applicant what the institution currently asks for. Mixing those ideas can produce misleading advice.

Read the label before the number

CollegeVerse's connected SAT reading/writing and mathematics figures come from historical IPEDS admissions records. The displayed 25th–75th percentile range describes enrolled students who submitted scores in that reporting context.

It is not a published minimum for the next application cycle. It also does not describe every enrolled student when some students did not submit a score.

What a middle range means

In a fictional example, a reported reading/writing range might be 600–700. This is a descriptive band for the measured group, not a rule that every admitted student scored within it. Students can be outside a middle-percentile band, and other parts of the application are not represented in the number.

Avoid translating a percentile into a guaranteed cutoff. The same caution applies when combining separate section ranges: a section percentile pair is not automatically a total-score percentile pair for the same individuals.

Check the current policy separately

Use the institution's current first-year or transfer instructions to answer whether a test is required, optional or otherwise considered. Check the relevant application cycle and course. Policies can differ, and a historical data row cannot establish a current rule.

Also distinguish a general admissions test from an English-language proficiency requirement. A school may describe those in separate sections, with different exemptions and reporting procedures.

Build a useful note

For each school, keep two separate entries:

  1. Historical context: dataset, year, score population and percentile range.
  2. Current instruction: official policy URL, applicant route, cycle and date checked.

This structure allows you to use the descriptive data without letting it overwrite the official application instructions.

Questions that deserve verification

Ask whether the policy applies to your applicant route, whether section or total scores are considered, and how official results must be submitted. If a source gives a minimum, record which test and program it applies to rather than assuming it describes the whole institution.

Our methodology documents the historical fields. The official IPEDS data resources provide the source definitions. For current instructions, follow the institution links on its school page.

Can I add the two section ranges to get a total-score range?

Adding section percentiles does not establish total-score percentiles. The students at a given reading percentile need not be the same students at that mathematics percentile. Preserve the separate section labels.

Does a missing range mean tests are not required?

Missing historical scores do not establish a current testing policy. Follow the current institution instructions for your application route and cycle, even when a directory does not display scores.
