Compare the definitions before the programme names
Computer Science and Computer Engineering can both involve software, but their reporting classifications ask different questions. The connected NCES CIP 2020 definition for Computer Science focuses on computing theory, computing problems and scientific approaches to systems. The general Computer Engineering classification describes applying mathematical and scientific principles to computer hardware and software systems and related equipment.
These are classification summaries, not a universal course syllabus. A university can organise departments, degree names, tracks and required modules differently. Start with the definitions, then check the exact programmes offered at your candidate institutions.
Which CIP codes should I research?
The connected Computer Science directory uses CIP 11.0701. The Computer Engineering directory uses CIP 14.0901. The word “General” is part of the second classification's official title. It does not mean every computer-related engineering programme belongs to that code.
Software Engineering and other computing classifications have their own identities. If a programme title contains “computing,” “software” or “information,” do not automatically assign it to either field. Read the institution's current description and compare it with the official scope.
What should I compare in the curriculum?
Build a small evidence table using the current programme handbook rather than a broad subject stereotype. Record the degree title, campus, required modules, optional tracks and the publication or entry-cycle date of each source.
For your own interests, investigate how each programme handles computing theory, programming, systems, mathematics, hardware-related material and practical work. These are questions to ask, not claims that every degree includes the same amount of each subject. Save module names and source links so that another reader could check the comparison.
Also distinguish a required module from an elective. A topic mentioned on a marketing page may belong to a track that is unavailable in your entry year. Delivery format, laboratory access, placement arrangements and prerequisites need their own current evidence.
Can a university appear in both field lists?
Yes. A reporting institution can have historical awards in more than one classification. The field-comparison tool finds US institutions with connected positive bachelor award observations in both exact codes. Each field keeps its own latest connected ending year.
For example, an institution might have a Computer Science observation ending in 2025 and a Computer Engineering observation ending in 2024. Such a pair describes two historical observations. It does not establish that both degrees are accepting applications now or that the two award groups were the same entering cohort.
Open the institution's filtered records to inspect the classification, award level, ending year and award count. An award count is not current enrolment, available places, programme quality or a personal graduation probability. Do not add the two fields to estimate unique students.
Keep the award level consistent
A comparison of bachelor research should use bachelor records on both sides. Master's and doctorate observations answer different questions. An institution appearing only in a master's result does not establish that it offers a current bachelor degree in that classification.
If you change the award level in the tool, save that choice with the results. Lack of a connected positive observation does not prove a programme is unavailable; verify the institution's current course directory before excluding it from your research.
How do I decide which fits my research plan?
Write down what you want to learn and which current curriculum evidence supports that interest. Compare entry requirements, costs, teaching language and the precise degree route separately from historical statistics. Check recognition requirements with the relevant body when professional recognition matters to your intended use of the degree.
There is no subject-wide result that selects a degree for every reader. A useful decision connects your questions to named modules, current official instructions and a complete budget. Use the CIP research guide to keep classification evidence separate from programme availability.
