Cal-GETC and IGETC are names you may encounter while researching transfer from a California community college. The right question is not simply which name appears in an older guide. You need to identify the pattern available for your enrollment history, your destination and your major.
Start with current UC guidance
The University of California's current general-education page says that, from 2025, Cal-GETC is the available general-education pattern for California community college transfer students, while some students enrolled before Fall 2025 may be able to complete IGETC. It directs students to their community college counselor for individual guidance.
Use that official UC page as the policy source. An old course-planning article should not decide which pattern applies to you.
General education is one part of the plan
A general-education pattern is not the whole of a transfer application or degree. Keep your major-preparation requirements and destination-specific instructions in separate sections of your plan. Completing one list should not be treated as proof that every other requirement is satisfied.
The official UC guidance also explains that recommendations differ by major and campus. That is a reason to verify the exact route, not a reason to assume one pattern is automatically best for every student.
Bring a useful worksheet to advising
Before asking for guidance, organize:
- Your first enrollment term at the community college.
- Your intended destination campus and major, if known.
- Completed, current and planned courses.
- The version and date of the planning document you have been using.
- Questions about certification and remaining requirements.
This turns a broad question such as “Should I do IGETC?” into a specific review of your circumstances. Let the official adviser confirm which pattern and conditions apply.
Handle older information deliberately
If you find conflicting guides, check the publication date and the period each one addresses. Preserve the useful historical explanation, but do not combine requirements from different policy versions into one list.
When updating your worksheet, record which advice changed and why. That small note is valuable if you later revisit a course choice or discuss your plan with a different adviser.
What CollegeVerse can and cannot supply
Our California directory helps identify institutions and their official websites. It does not certify a general-education pattern, evaluate your courses or guarantee admission. Use the directory to reach the official source, then keep the current planning decision with the evidence supporting it.
This article is a planning guide. The applicable pattern and any exceptions need confirmation from the community college and destination institution.
Is general education the same as major preparation?
No. Keep the two requirement lists separate. The current UC guidance says recommendations vary by campus and major, and some subjects prioritize major prerequisites. Check the destination's instructions before arranging your course sequence.
Which dates should I take to my counselor?
Bring your first California community college enrollment term, the terms when you completed relevant courses, and the date of the planning guidance you used. UC identifies enrollment before Fall 2025 as potentially relevant to IGETC eligibility; your counselor should confirm the applicable route.
