What to verify for this unit

Original DUO RIO overview of funded current and future higher education education records. OPLEIDING means a programme and VARIANT a programme variant. Each unit page groups only the original OPLEIDINGSEENHEIDCODE; an offering or location is not counted as a separate degree. The list does not cover every private provider or guarantee that applications are open.

Reported start, end and intake dates remain source evidence rather than a promise of current availability. A missing end date does not establish an open intake. Names, qualification labels, codes, languages and missing values remain in Dutch. No CIP equivalence, inferred admissions conditions or institution-name matches are added. Contextual offering records and source-name aliases are preserved together.

OMSCHRIJVING
The BSc programme in Tourism (BTO) is a collaborative endeavour of Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) and Wageningen University (WU). For this joint programme, which is taught completely in English, education is being provided in Breda (1st and 2nd year) and Wageningen (3rd year).\n\nTourism's societal importance has grown significantly over the last decades and its contribution to the global economy is well documented: the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) counted 1.5 billion international tourist arrivals in 2025, with domestic and international tourism contributing roughly 10% to global income and employment. But tourism is more than an economic engine: it is closely intertwined with the major cultural, environmental, political and technological changes that have been transforming the world. It adds to many of the complex challenges in contemporary societies at the global, regional and local level, but can also contribute to their solutions and is increasingly recognized as a powerful agent of change.\n\nThe BTO programme approaches the tourism phenomenon from three main disciplinary perspectives (the social, environmental and economic sciences) to address the three pillars of sustainability: the pursuit of a dignified life for all (e.g. Sustainable Development Goals), the environmental limits facing humanity (e.g. Planetary Boundaries), and the challenge to make the best use of available resources (economic efficiency). In the course of the programme, these perspectives are gradually combined in pursuit of truly integrated understandings of a global polycrisis.
